Withdrawal

The first step of any drug or alcohol rehabilitation is to stop using them. Withdrawal is a serious matter and each case should be evaluated with great care. Several factors are taken into consideration when assessing a safe and unproblematic withdrawal. Some of these factors are as follows:

•        Drug(s) or alcohol used
•        Amount and frequency of use
•        Overall health and age of the individual
•        The length of time of usage
•        Any psychiatric history

Once these elements are carefully contemplated, a protected and effective withdrawal process can be implemented. The idea of such a withdrawal is interpreted in a couple of different ways. There are medical detoxes and drug free detox.

First, we will examine a medical detox. This is when one drug is administered to relieve withdrawal symptoms and aid the person in coming off of another drug.  At times, this method is necessary, when it is not safe to experience withdrawal otherwise. When this is the case, the substitution drug should be delivered in minimal amounts and for a nominal amount of time in decreasing doses.

Occasionally, drugs such as heroin or alcohol will require such a medical detox in order to ensure the safety and well being of the user. This method does have its consequences. Negative aspects of this technique include the withdrawal of the substitution drug, which, additionally, prolongs the entire withdrawal process.

Additionally, this method often becomes a substitution drug therapy for life.

The recipient will require more and more of the substitution drug in order to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Not only does this technique prolong the drug usage, it never handles the addiction. Their bodies are still dependent on the substitution drug and they have no life skills that are necessary to live drug free. This method of withdrawal should only be used when medically necessary.

Secondly, a drug free detox is that in which holistic means of repairing the body and the mind through the withdrawal process are administered. There are various interpretations of how this is best accomplished. Different techniques include acupuncture, herbal therapy, yoga, hypnosis, nutrition, prayer, exercise, biofeedback and brain biofeedback. One or any combination of these may be delivered to the user. As with anything else, what works well for one person may not work as well for another. Each person should be treated as an individual case.  These can factor into a successful, drug free withdrawal.

There are many rehabilitation centers that do believe that a drug free detox is best and people, becoming more and more educated on drug dependency or alcohol addiction, are beginning to lean in this direction. When in search of help for oneself or your loved one, drug free and holistic approaches are definitely something that should be taken into consideration for the overall beneficial result desired.
