At the age of 16 I was introduced to a drug that I
abused for over three years - LSD. It was first given to me by my 19
year-old-boyfriend who told me that the effects of this drug were like nothing
else; that by taking this drug I would be able to see the world like I had
never seen it before. After hearing that I was all for it. What I was unaware
of was the fact that LSD is the most potent hallucinogen known to
man.
It was originally synthesized in 1938 by Dr. Albert Hoffman, but
its hallucinogenic effects were unknown until 1943, when Dr. Hoffman
accidentally consumed some LSD himself. Following this accidental dosing, LSD
was used as a research tool to actually study mental illnesses. My first
experience with the drug can only be described as scary. The drug came on a
small piece of paper no bigger than my index finger which I later found out was
called blotter. Often, LSD is sold in tablet form (usually small tablets known
as microdots), on sugar cubes, in thin squares of gelatin (commonly referred to
as window panes), and most commonly, as blotter paper which are sheets of paper
soaked in LSD, covered with colorful designs or artwork, and perforated into
one-quarter inch squares or individual dosage units. Fifteen minutes after
putting the paper on my tongue my entire body got hot and I began to sweat.
Some other reactions that I experienced while on the drug included dilated
pupils, nausea and "goose bumps". While high on LSD I felt like there was a
huge distortion both in my mind and body. The visual changes as well as the
extreme changes in mood were like some strange scary trip - one in which I felt
like I had no control over my mind and body. Many users experience impaired
depth and time perception, as well as a distorted perception of the size and
shape of objects, movements, color, sound, touch and even their own body
images. The effects usually lasted for 10 to 12 hours.
The days
following my LSD use, I was filled with anxiety and extreme depression. Many
users also experience "flashbacks," which are recurrences of the effects of
LSD, days or even months after taking the last dose. LSD use actually declined
after its initial popularity in the 1960s, LSD made a comeback in the 1990s. I
began using the drug in 1996. LSD is sold under more than 80 street names
including acid, blotter, doses, and trips, as well as names that reflect the
designs on the sheets of blotter paper. Following my first 'trip' on LSD I
would eat it frequently, sometimes up to four or five times per week for an
extended period. Each time I would take the drug mentally, I was drifting more
and more out of reality. The eventual effect was the inability to feel normal
in my own skin.
By the time I decided to stop using I had no idea how
to regain what I had lost mentally from using so much LSD. I immediately turned
to other drugs and battled an addiction to about every drug on the market for
the next few years. My nightmare finally ended in August 2001 when I went
through the Narconon program which is a public benefit non-profit organization
that has been committed to fighting drug abuse for over 35 years. The program
uses the drug and alcohol rehabilitation method researched and developed by
American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. After completing this program
I was finally able to handle my addiction once and for all.
